In a recent study, researchers assessed the impact of a video-based advance care planning (ACP) tool on adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with advanced cancer and their caregivers. In a pilot randomized controlled trial with 50 AYA-patient and caregiver dyads, participants predominantly expressed a goal of life-prolonging care before the intervention, which decreased after the intervention. However, there was no significant change in preferences for life-prolonging care, CPR, or ventilation between the video intervention group and the control group. The video intervention did lead to increased ACP knowledge and readiness among AYAs and reduced decisional conflict among caregivers. Overall, the study suggests that video-based ACP tools can be useful in informing AYAs and caregivers about end-of-life care options and facilitating ACP discussions.
