Study Reveals Gap in Communication Preferences and Reality for Patients With Cancer at First Oncology Appointment

In a recent study, researchers evaluated the communication preferences of 169 patients with cancer at their first oncology appointment, revealing a gap between their expectations and actual experiences. Using the Communication in First Medical Oncology Appointment Questionnaire to assess preferences in content, facilitation, and support, the results showed a significant emphasis on content, with patients valuing physicians’ knowledge and honesty. Researchers of the study indicated a need for improved communication skills among medical professionals, addressing the disparity between patient expectations and clinical practice.
