Study Demonstrates Success in Addressing Disparities in US Cancer Care Access, Emphasizes Need for Inclusive Recruitment Strategies

Researchers of a study addressed the systemic disparities in cancer care access in the US, leading to increased morbidity and mortality in certain populations. The Alliance to Advance Patient-Centered Cancer Care involved six grantees implementing diverse interventions to reduce disparities and enhance care quality for underrepresented populations, including Black and Latinx individuals, non-English speakers, and rural residents. Using the RE-AIM framework for evaluation, the study found that, between 2018 and 2020, 2,390 out of 5,309 potentially eligible participants were included, highlighting the importance of intentional recruitment and engagement strategies to ensure that individuals from historically underserved communities are included in patient-centered cancer care interventions.
